Pony with separation anxiety: progress
Here’s an update on Sparky, the pony with separation anxiety.
The day came for the love of his life, Shona, to move onto greener pastures and although we’d prepared Sparky well in advance, it was still a very difficult time. Sparky was pretty much inconsolable for three days afterwards, neighing, pacing (at time galloping) around the property searching for Shona, not eating much and refusing to socialise with any of the other horses. Truly, it was heartbreaking, for him and for me.
I threw everything I had at Sparky. We did more Petneticswith him, and this time his focus had moved from the original (base chakra) pattern of fear to the (heart chakra) pattern of grief and loss. I supported him with Ignatia homeopathy (the ‘grief remedy’) as well as changing the Seven Animals Seven Chakrasessence from the base chakra essence to the heart chakra essence. I gave him Reiki. I introduced activities to help him create a ‘break state’ and let him focus on something else for short periods.
But still, he grieved. Painfully. Messily. Loudly.
And here’s the thing. While I wanted more than anything to take away that pain, to stop him from suffering at all, just as a mother wishes to heal her child’s heart when they’ve lost a significant relationship, at the end of the day I still had to let him grieve.
I may have wanted to wave my magic wand and make it disappear, but he still had to do the work. All those therapies supported the process and perhaps even helped it to move faster. But we can never deny grief its journey.
I am pleased to report that Sparky is doing much better. It took a good week, but he is being more social and has even begun mutually grooming my Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue foster pony, Bella. He seems calm and okay. He doesn’t have a new love of his life or best friend yet, but he’s getting on with it and mixing with the herd.
And I’m very proud of him for moving through his grief to get to the other side. Any one of us who has suffered loss knows how difficult this can be.
